Flash

Was at a great conference in Brighton earlier in the week, Flash on the Beach. Great group of speakers covering a whole range of Flash and web design related topics. The organiser done a great job and Brighton proved to be a great venue (despite the storm force winds blowing on the seafront).

Some of the best sessions were

  • Aral Balkan discussing software development process and the use of Agile methodologies like eXtreme programming.
  • Mike Chambers from Adobe showcasing the new Apollo project they’re developing. This looks really promising
  • Richard Legget showing the power of Flash Lite 2 for mobile devices.
  • and Jeremy Keith discussing the pros and cons of Ajax v Flash for web development.

Didn’t notice any other Irish developers over there. Doesn’t seem to be many serious Irish developers in the Flash/Flex community.

Flash on the Beach

I’ll be going to Flash on the Beach in Brighton, UK at the start of December. It’s a major Flash conference with a great line-up of speakers and it’s the first time in years that we’ve had a big Flash conference in these parts.

Work are nicely paying for the trip for two of us, but it makes total sense for them to, we do huge amounts of work using Flash and it’s important that we attend big events like this to find out what’s new, get fresh ideas and meet some of the top names in the business (and maybe have 1 or 2 drinks in the spirit of socialising & networking!)

Added a couple of work samples to the About page. Just to show some of the websites I work on. Most of the work here at Interactive Services is confidential, client specific so it can’t be showcased unfortunately.

I do a few personal/private websites when I can but development here at work is pretty hectic so that’s taking up most of my time at the moment.

247care.ie website

I updated the website for Marian’s company 24/7 Relief Care, it’s at www.247care.ie. It’s done using Flash. Got a template, which looked good but wasn’t set up very well behind the scenes. Restructured it so that now all the content comes from an xml file which will make it easy to update.

Been using StatCounter and Google Analytics, two very good website statistics sites that give detailed analysis of the visitors to your site. I find the StatCounter results easier to check at a glance but for some reason they won’t provide stats on Flash version on that which they do on Google. It’s handy to be able to see at a glance the systems, browsers etc. that all your visitors are using.
