Amstrad 6128 Plus Computer
December 14th, 2007
Just got very nostalgic as I came across the Amstrad 6128 Plus computer, the system that started my journey into the world of computers and contributed immensely to my current career path of programming. I think I was about 12 when Santa Claus delivered one and it has to have been the most significant and most used present I ever got. Everyone else at that time had their Commodore 64s and eventually their Amigas but I got years out of that Amstrad. My programming skills developed over countless hours of typing, modifying and creating BASIC programs.
It had a weird 3″ floppy disk drive that meant games were hard to come by, particularly in Laois/Kilkenny, but some of the games it did have were great, check out the version of Batman The Movie via Youtube.
Must have a root around and see if it’s still at home somewhere!

My first computer was a Spectrum. It ran games through a tape recorder! To load a game, you’d insert the cassette tape into the tape recorder and press play.. then the loading screens would start… you’d see a white screen, then a red screen, then a blue screen repeat by 20 and then the game MIGHT if you were lucky complete loading. I remember writing BASIC programs also, but not sure if it was on our Spectrum or on my cousin’s computer (which I can’t remember the make of). Actually, when I was 11 in junior high in the US we had a computer class where we learned BASIC programming. I remember one of our project was to make a circle move around the screen… or something like that.. didn’t you have to number the lines of code? 10, 20, 30.. and if you wanted to put a line of code in between 10 and 20, you’d number it 15.. or maybe 12 if you were feeling spontaneous!
