Import large data files into MySQL

4 comments September 18th, 2007

Spent a few hours trying to deal with importing a huge sql data file into MySQL before I eventually found the easiest solution via another site - import large file into mysql. The file is over 1 Gig so it’s pretty big and phpmyadmin and the web server are limited in the filesizes they can handle, everything kept timing out on me. I even tried an alternate solution called bigdump but that timed out aswell. In the end the best way to handle it is very simple - let MySQL do all the work by using the SOURCE command from the command line, “SOURCE mybigfile.sql” then sit back and let the mysql server do it’s thing.

The simplest and best solutions often get lost in a maze of people trying to be too clever or not fully appreciating the capabilities of the tool in front of them.

Deliveries update

Well it seems An Post located my package eventually, I guess that was just a case of sloooooowww delivery on their part, which we’re well used to here. Have to say Amazon were excellent in this case, they almost immediately offered to send out a new copy free of charge.

But I’m still waiting on the UPS/Pixmania mess to be sorted. It’s not like a box of 25 dvds is critical to me but their handling of the matter between the two of them is pretty awful and I think that’s more on the UPS side than the Pixmania side.

UPS and An Post losing my deliveries

How hard can it be to deliver a package from one location to another? UPS here in Ireland have somehow “lost” a small package, of 25 dvds, that I ordered from Pixmania and now An Post have somehow mislaid a book from Amazon.

The An Post one I’m hopeful still might turn up, it’s probably sitting in a collection centre somewhere and An Post are notoriously slow at times with deliveries, but the UPS one really bugs me. I missed the delivery one day and when I got hold of the guy he said he was on the way back to the distribution centre and I’d get a call the next day when they were going to deliver again. However the next morning I have an email in my inbox ( I signed up for notifications) telling me that the package was damaged and the contents were gone! No one rang me to let me know what was going on so when I eventually got in touch with them they basically said that all they had was empty packaging and that it was gone and I’d have to contact Pixmania to re-order the DVDs. What’s the most likely scenario here - to me it’s obvious, someone ripped open the package and stole the DVDs and this while it was in the UPS distibution centre overnight. Hmmm.

I got back onto Pixmania eventually and they said they’d have to check with UPS - but they can see the status from UPS’s tracking service so it’s obvious what happened. I’ve now been waiting 2 weeks for Pixmania to get back to me.
