International Rules
November 7th, 2006
I was at the International Rules game at the weekend. Good atmosphere in Croke Park with around 82,000 people, pity the match was so bad. Aside from the much-hyped fighting, the actual quality of the play was terrible. The Irish team couldn’t kick the ball properly, further evidence of the reduction in skill in gaelic football nowadays. The Aussies were far better in all aspects of the game.
All the hoopla about the violence is a bit contradictory when you consider what goes on in club games all round the country every weekend of the year. Referees attacked, players assaulted, mass brawls and everyone just turns a blind eye!
The hurling/shinty game was played in much better spirits but was equally bad for Ireland, with the Scottish team being far superior in most aspects.
